An Artist Visits Year 3

On Wednesday 2nd May Lisa, an artist, came to visit Year 3. They had the opportunity to look at her sketch books and ask her questions about her work and how she thinks of an idea for a piece of art work. The children found out about how Lisa develops an idea over time. The children learnt a lot and were very excited her Lisa's work.

Habitat Presentations

The children have been learning about woodland habitats. They had to research an animal that lived in the habitat in order to understand what their habitat was like. The children then made the habitat and presented it to the class along with a presentation they made about the animal and it's habitat on PowerPoint.

Money Project

Year 3 had a bake sale on Wednesday 24th April. This was the end of a project that the children had worked extremely hard on. The children were given £50 to spend as a class. After a long discussion the children decided to spend some of the money on ingredients to make biscuits to sell in the hope of making a profit. The children then had to work out what ingredients they needed, how much of each item was needed, how much each ingredient would cost and how much this would come to altogether. Once they had found this out in groups they then had to decide how much to sell each biscuit for. They had to take into account how much they were going to spend on ingredients and how much they thought the biscuits were worth. The children decided on 85p per biscuit. This was motivated by how much profit they would receive. The children did discuss whether their parents would want to pay this much for a biscuit. The children got the classroom ready for the sale by making signs, invitations and posters. The bake sale was a huge success. After the bake sale the children decided, after much research on how much the items they wanted to buy were, to buy a tropical fish task and tropical fish. Linking Schools - St John's Visit Banks Lane Junior

On Monday 23rd April Year 3 visited Banks Lane as part of our linking schools project. The children did a fantastic job of representing our school. They got stuck into all of the activities and were extremely well behaved and polite. Here is the day in pictures:

The day started with circle time games and a tour around the school. The St John's children were overwhelmed by the size of Banks Lane:

The children then rotated around 4 activities. These were making pirate hats, learning a pirate dance, making a healthy lunch and using the computers to write about their favourite parts of linking schools so far:

The children got to build relationships with children from the other school when playing in the quad at playtime and lunchtime:

The children ate the healthy lunch they had made during the morning's activities whilst catching up with members of Banks Lane:

The day finished off with a treasure hunt and both classes performing the pirate dance together. Thanks to Banks Lane for a fantastic day! We really enjoyed ourselves and cannot wait for our next trip together.

Sport Relief Afternoon - Sport Afternoon and Cake Sale

The children really enjoyed playing sport and decorating cakes and biscuits for a great project, Sport Relief. The children were able to choose whether to play tennis, hockey, cricket or football before decorating a cake and biscuit each for the cake sale at the end of the day!

Linking Schools Project - Banks Lane Visit St John's - Thursday 15th March

Banks Lane Junior came to visit St John's Primary on Thursday 15th March. It was the second time that the children had met each other. They really enjoyed the day which was spent looking around the local area and our school and taking part in actvities that the Year 3 children felt they wanted to share with Banks Lane. The day was extremely successful. We are extremely proud of both classes. Well done!

The day started with the St John's children giving the children from Banks Lane a tour around St John's.

After playing on the hill, both classes set off on a trip to the Heaton's Common.

Once the children got to the Common they used magnifying glasses to look closer at what lives in the Common and sketched things of interest.

When we got back to school the children had lunch together.

After the children had finished their lunch they rotated around four activities that the children at St John's wanted the Banks Lane children to see. These are activities that the children enjoy doing during an average week at St John's.

One activity was to learn Urdu. The children learnt the numbers 1 to 10 in Urdu as well as a number song.

Another activity was an Art activity. The children had to draw portraits of someone from a different school and write words to describe that person around the picture.

The children did a singing and identity activity. The children learnt a song about Tutankhamen and then had to find their name and link it to a person in Banks Lane or St John's with a shared interest.



The final of the four activities was an ICT activity. The children enjoyed blogging together on a new blog set up for the linking schools project.

The children came together at the end of the day to share their experiences. They sang their learnt songs together. The children were sad that Banks Lane had to leave as they had made so many new friends!



We really enjoyed Banks Lane coming to visit us at St John's! We can't wait to visit them at their school!
